Get ready with me | Bantu knot out and makeup

I like the way my makeup game is coming up. I’m quite a newbie when it comes to makeup but I’m making good progress. The natural look is what I like better than anything. I like to look natural and yet accentuate my features a little to make them pop a bit. This time I added a 2 shades lip colour and I am telling you, every time I use these two shades, it just adds a whole dimension to my lip game. I use a lot of Yardley products in the video but believe me when I say, it was not sponsored at all. I just happen to use a lot of them when it comes to makeup because that’s the brand I was introduced to first. And, because I don’t apply a lot of makeup, what I buy normally lasts me more than a year.

I have not done bantu knots in a while and all this time, I am busy struggling with volume of my hair especially when I let it out or want an afro. If you’re not over 40 yet, you will understand that for some women, the hair is not as full at that age going up. So, yes, my hair is not as full as it used to be when I was younger, but I am working on it. However, the  bantu knots just do it for me man. They really come to the rescue. And I prefer the untwisted ones because one would think I put rollers or perm rods to curl my hair. The curls are also a bit undefined which adds on the illusion of more volume.

Yes, afterwards, I did a whole photo shoot you guys, mainly because the dress I was wearing was new, designed and cut by me, had someone help me finish sewing it because, you know, your girl is short of time. But I still love designing clothes and from time to time, I  do indulge myself into doing that. My hubby calls it fishing. Because it is regarded as a relaxing activity when I do it.

African Threading with Marley Hair & Chebe butter

So, you can’t do twists on your own but African threading is your thing? I got you covered.This hairstyle indeed involves some braiding and twisting but it is done on the natural hair. The hair extension, in this case Marley hair, is then crocheted into the hair. So, no problems with braiding with extension which can be a challenge for a lot of people. The hair and extension is then wrapped using yarn and viola, a protective style that will get some people confused if it is your hair or not. Go on, watch the video and you will see how simple it is.

I started off with stretched hair. However, any condition of  hair is great. Any length as well. As long as you have enough length to do the initial braid to crochet the hair extension. I also applied some Chebe butter which I have been trying out for some time.  I’m happy to report that, after 3 weeks when I removed the hair style, my hair felt smooth and very soft. Very little breakage of the hair as well. So, I’m loving the Chebe butter and very soon it will be available online for those no so DIY girls or who want a one process application of a product.


I find that, this hairstyle was really the best when applying Chebe to my hair because, the small pieces of Chebe powder where not visible at all after my hair was done. So, I could slap on as much as I wanted without the fear that I will be asked a few questions by people I meet wanting to know what was on my hair. I will surely do this hairstyle again and my hair pomade of choice will definitely be the Chebe butter.

For the Marley hair, I used old Brown & Ayo Marley hair. Did you know you can use Marley hair over and over again? Yeah, it’s true. You can use it for different things as well. You just need to wash it and condition it to freshen it up a bit. Otherwise, it’s an asset to a naturalista who is into hair extensions. I have used mine over 5 times already. Call me skimpy, I don’t mind. I’ve got kids to feed hey! Every cent counts.

I stayed with this hairstyle for over 3 weeks and I even styled it like dreadlocks at some point. So, really, there is not limit on how long you can keep this hairstyle for. Just make sure your hair doesn’t lock. Unless that’s your plan, to transition into real locks. I enjoyed this hairstyle shame. Too much.

Sleek Ponytail on Short Hair.

This is the second part of the hairstyles that I managed to do with my sleek low ponytail. Depending on the accessories I wore, I managed to wear my hair from a date night outfit to an African themed wedding. Since we are in the wedding season, end of year parties or just getting together to celebrate life, what to do with the hair is often a girls worry and sometimes we forget how versatile African hair is and that we are spoilt for choice when it comes to hairstyles. In my opinion, a sleek low ponytail is the best hairstyle that can fit many occasions. It is also very easy to do and can be done in minutes, soon after washing the hair. That way, no need to spend the rest of your day indoors just because you washed your hair. This hairstyle makes the life of a naturalista pretty easy and looking glamorous literally effortless.

For these two hairstyles, I used the same sleek ponytail that I did in this video and if you have not watched it, then go ahead and check it out. I also used Marley hair and I like using the Brown & Ayo Marley hair. Any kind of hair will do just fine though. Just that, the closer the additional hair is to your hair texture, the more realistic your hair will be looking. The accessories used are basically the pins and also the beads in the African themed hairstyle. I loved creating these styles and I hope you will get some ideas on how to do your hair as well.

The question I got the most is, what I used to sleek the hair down. I used eco styler gel. The green one with Olive oil. It has maximum hold and helps to keep my natural hair laid down. If you watch part one of the video, you will see what I do to sleek the hair down. The other question is, how long I can keep this hairstyle for? Well, that depends on my schedule. Sometimes I can do a hairstyle but need to attend an event where my hair should be out. In the end, I may remove the hairstyle earlier. Otherwise, one can keep the sleek ponytail for 8 days or even more. Tying a scarf when you sleep and also when you shower will preserve your hairstyle very well. You can also add some more gel, not too much, on your hairline and brush the hair down using a small brush, comb or a toothbrush that you have now upgraded to laying of edges.

Trending Natural Hairstyles This Spring at Nashe Hair Studio.

Working at Nashe Hair Studio has allowed me to see hairstyle trends in the natural hair space as they come and go. If you are bit in the rut and not sure what to do with your hair, here are some hairstyles that have been trending this spring at Nashe Hair Studio.

Half updo with added hair

The half updo with added hair has become a favourite at Nashe Hair Studio. This hairstyle is suitable for any occasion, from bride, bridesmaid to wearing it to work or play. That is why it is so popular because one can wear it for that special occasion during the weekend and then still wear it to work the next week without any issues. It also offers some versatility in styling your hair, from letting it down as shown in the picture to bun or a roll and tuck hairstyles with the hair at the back. The added hair at the back is Marley hair which looks very close to natural hair when combed out. It can be done using any type of hair which will alter the outcome a little bit but still look cute.

The sleek bun as well is so popular with our natural brides and bridesmaids. This hairstyle is also allows you to get the most out of a special occasion hairstyle in the following week. The low bun allows you to play around with hats and other traditional head wear if you will also be doing the traditional wedding soon after the white church wedding as is quite common in South Africa.

Vixen braids

You would swear this is all her hair. These are vixen braids done using the crochet method with some leave out hair. The styles one can get from vixen braids is so much. But, maintaining the leave out hair can be tasking. The leave out hair may shrink and not look too similar to your added Marley hair. So daily maintenance will be needed.

A short afro wig

That’s where using coily hair that resembles shrunken hair comes in very handy. This afro wig has become a favourite with a lot of Nashe Hair Studio clients. In this heat, emergency hair can’t be any kinder and cooler. Not touching the shoulders, not in your face and so light on the head you will even forget you have a wig on. This wig leaves a lot of people drooling, thinking it is your actual hair. When I wear this wig, I have a hard time convincing people it is a wig such that, sometimes I just receive the compliment and move on.

These braids with highlights and curled at the ends are trending as well. Made small enough for great movement and so that they are neither too heavy nor too hot for the wearer, these medium braids are so loved these days. Other people prefer them in one colour though and I think both ways, they are so so cute. My next hairstyle. I hope.

Marley twists

The curls can also be enjoyed on Marley twists. Gone are the days of just plain Marley twists. A lot of people are requesting some curls at the ends on either short or longer length Marley twists.

Spring twists

Last but not least, the spring twists. These are just coming in and they hit the road running. We often run out of stock of this hair because the moment we get stock, it just goes like that (fingers snapping). We are also in so much love with them.

Bubble Ponytail Tutorial

One of the things that I promised myself I would do after exams was play in my hair. So, I’ve been trying out different hairstyles that I’ve been dying to try but had no time on my hands to do so or I would feel so guilty doing instead of studying. The bubble ponytail is one of those which I tried out some time earlier this month and it was such a wow moment for me actually. I posted the images on Instagram and Facebook and a lot of people loved it as well. So, I decided to do a tutorial for you guys so that you can see how I do it. And, you never know, you may find some hairstyle inspiration as well.

I did the hairstyle on stretched hair which I stretched using African threading, aka Benny and Betty, aka amaphondo, aka mabhanzi, aka mangongo. Wow, it you don’t know what that is after all the explanation, then you just have to watch the video so you can see this heatless method that is used to stretch African natural hair. I also used Marley hair for my ponytail, which I think is not just a ponytail but actually a mohawk with a ponytail. I also used hair ties to secure the Marley hair onto my hair and also to do the bubbles to make it a bubble ponytail.

Braids, Protective Styling

If they cause your hair to pull out, and you end up having a receding hairline, That’s no longer a protective style right? Because, if the hair you are trying to protect fall out with the braids, there’s no progress there. Braids are indeed a very good and reliable protective style but if not done well, they will end up taking you 2 steps back instead of a step towards your hair goals, whatever they may be.

I had braids done on my hair recently and I think they were too tight. I did not loose much hair but I think my hairline looks thinner. Receding hairline or traction alopecia being a very common problem among African women can happen to anyone. Braids being a common cause of traction along the hairline, I thought to share some tips on how to tell that your braids may not be a protective style after all.

How to tell your braids are too tight.

  • There’s visible pulling especially along the front hairline. This you need to tell the stylist right away that the braids are too tight so that changes can be done.
  • You are finding it hard to tie them down even after 3 days of having them in. Failing to tie your braids soon after they are done may be understandable because some people like myself have generally a sensitive scalp. But 3 days in, then you know they are too tight. Wash your braids. They tend to loosen a bit after being washed. Or even just run some water through them without having to use shampoo or conditioner.
  • There is some white stuff along your hairline specially. That’s your hair that has already pulled out from your scalp. There is not much that you can do at this point to prevent any damage except that you will need to give your hairline some rest, so no braids for some time. Do loose twists or something much simpler, that does not cause any inflammation of your hairline so that you give it a chance to heal and usually, the lost hair will grow back. It’s when the pulling is left to go on unabated that scarring happens and hair refuses to grow again.

I hope this helps someone and you are able to keep those edges or that hairline growing. Prevention is better than cure so do what you can to make sure you preserve your hairline. If you notice any thinning, take precaution quickly and nip it in the bud so that you don’t scar. It takes longer to recover a hairline than loosing it. So, take care. Don’t loose hair or sleep over a hairstyle. Here are some of the photos I took when I had the braids in.

Locked Mini Twists. How to keep twists for longer.

I have done this before so it is not the first time for me to lock the roots of my twists so that I can get a bit more weeks with the style. However, I did it on much thicker twists so it worked out perfect. It was not too difficult to take out the extensions or to detangle. This time, they are mini twists, so no guarantees on the take down. However, my hair does not lock easily so I am hoping it will not be too much of a hassle.

I locked the roots of these chunky Marley Twists before for just over a week.

So, yeah, I locked my twists. I washed my hair before the twisting. In fact, I deep conditioned first in the steamer as well and when I was done, my hair was super clean and my scalp feeling all sorts of freshness. I then sprayed my scalp and hair with the Nashe Organics Daily Spray as a leave-in. I didn’t want to apply too much product because I used some gel to lock the roots and also tame the fly-aways that were so visible through the extensions. I then started twisting, the drealocks kind of twisting as if I am re-touching dreadlocks. I then styled my hair afterwards which is what kept the locked part intact considering I used gel and also my hair does not lock easily. I actually do not want it to lock so that suits me perfectly. I am almost a week in the style and I think it will last me through the week and I will see if I’ll be keen to keep the style longer or I will wash and lock again. From wash to styling my hair, it took about 2 hours. Not too bad hey?

I love these twists so much you guys. They are so light, since it is half length of the braid used, they feel like hair almost and so not a big hassle to manage and style. I can swim in them and just jump in the shower to rinse out the pool water afterwards.  Do you want this look? I used one pack of Brown & Ayo Marley in colour 1B. Doing the twists took about 3 hours from start of plaiting to finish. I used Nashe Organics products to wash and condition my hair and then used Jabu Stone Invisi wax. And so far, so good.

The reason why I had my hair in twists in the first place was because I was travelling to Malawi early in November. Soon after that, I was going to be sitting for exams and I knew I wanted a low maintenance hairstyle and twists don’t disappoint all the time. These smaller ones were also very kind to my schedule. Finally Opened my Natural Hair Salon

Yay. Like for the longest time, some of you guys have been asking me to open a hair salon. I even got ultimatums several times and honestly then, I just felt I still had a lot on my plate. You know, figuring out making products, selling them and blogging takes a lot of my time. Not to mention that I am a wife and a mother which I sometimes feel is also a full time job. Talk of school runs, sporting events and still have time to breathe. However, this year, I knew I could not keep pushing this project forward anymore. So the year started with me thinking about a salon, praying about a salon and obsessing about salons on Pinterest. And that salon which I call a Hair Studio has finally opened its doors with itching fingers to give your natural hair the perfect salon experience.

 

Hair Styling Background.

I have always been doing hair as far back as primary school. Who taught me how to do hair I may not know but what I remember is, I started doing people’s hair back when I was grade in 6. And this was not so that a person could wear a wig on top t cover it. But really styling someone’s hair for the street. So throughout high school, I was doing my peers’ hair in boarding school and during school holidays when back home. When I went to college, my weekends were often filled with appointments from Friday afternoon. I always joke about the fact that I have never been in a night club to dance all night because when the other girls went clubbing, I would be doing someone’s hair or would be too tired to go dancing all night anyway. There was a time when I had a full time job and my weekends were kind of free, I still did people’s hair then. If I would go for a while without doing someone’s hair, I would even start craving for it and I remember, I would ask the little girls in the complex we staid in to go ask their mum if I can do their hair. And I would do hair for free just to satisfy my craving and passion to be doing hair. I never used to take payment for it so that people would not come all the time though because sometimes I would be too busy to do hair. That arrangement suited me well because I would do hair only when I had enough time to do it. I also do my own hair most of the times which I sometimes record and share on on my YouTube channel. So, doing hair has been part of my life for so long and this hair studio was inevitable.

Why Now Though?

Well, the timing just seemed right. I was more settled in Natural Moisture as a manufacturer, wholesaler and retailer of natural hair products. I needed a new challenge. Something I had never done before and something I knew will be highly beneficial to Natural Moisture’s business, our loyal customers and the readers of this blog. It was long overdue as well. Even when we used to rent office space in Eastgate Ext 21 and we had no drainage at our unit for us to be able to wash or treat hair. But I still had customers insist that I do their hair anyway and some came several times even.  So they used to come washed up, water dripping still and I would do their hair at the back office while they sat in an uncomfortable plastic black chair. So, I had to open this salon either way. It would have to be natural salon though because that’s what I stand for.

Why Only Natural Hair?

As I mentioned before, that’s what I stand for. I don’t stand for all types of hair as much as I may be able to handle all types of hair. I stand for African, curly kinky coily hair. So, if you come to the studio with relaxed hair what happens? We will not send you away. Of course not. We will welcome you, wash or treat your hair and do all other tings that you may want us to do on your hair. But we will not apply a relaxer or a perm to your hair. That we can’t do. Natural hair care has been by far the most sidelined hair even in Africa. I have visited many a salon and stylists are frustrated because they don’t know what to do with our shrunken coils and naturalistas have told many horror stories about their salon experiences. So this has to stop and our natural sisters need to have a home. A place they can go to where they know, no one is going to ask them to just relax their hair. No one is going to sneak a relaxer in a deep conditioner to texturise the hair just to make it soft nyana. The right tools are going to be used every time and using heat to stretch hair is going to be an option and not a must. There are a number of trusted friends who advised me against making it only natural hair care and include the relaxers and perms because they bring in more money and they are quicker to do. You know, a hair salon is still a business and still needs to be sustainable and profitable. Their advice makes a lot of sense. It really does. It takes way less time to deal with relaxed hair than natural hair. But I feel that’s what created the discrimination in the first place where stylists prefer straight relaxed hair because it does not take long to wash, detangle and style. But, what about our hair? Can’t we have an option to wear it the way it grows out of our scalp? So, I created this studio to be a place where naturals can completely feel at home. I am busy training stylists to understand the unique needs of Afro hair, the terms us naturals use and all that stuff that only us know about and matters a lot to us. You know, a little naturals haven of our own.

Products.

NMHair Studio will be using mostly our loved and trusted Nashe Organics products which are available at Natural Moisture Online Shop and In store but, we use other brands as well depending on clients hair needs.  We currently have Design Essentials Naturals and Head & Shoulders African Scalp Care.

Equipment Available.

We have tried to have the basic equipment since we are still starting out so, we besides the wash basins and mirrors, we also have a hooded dryer and a steamer which are both top of the range ionic and all that good stuff. We also have a hand held blower with cold air function so we can still stretch the hair without using heat if you want us to. Tjo, we ask a lot of questions to make sure that what we do to your hair is what you want us to do. No guess work. We also have a flat iron for those silk press styles just in case although since we opened, we have only used it like once.

Pricing

Our prices start from R250 for a wash and cornrows start from R150. A wash comes with either blow drying or a simple flat twist or braid. There are bundles as well which turn out cheaper like a wash and cornrows will be R350. I have had some people ask me why our prices are not like the other salons in Edenvale or Jo’burg and this why. We will not use any of those products that are sold at R45 for 5 litres. No. And we will not hurry through your hair, pulling and combing as fast as we can so that we can quickly finish so that we can work on the next head. No. We use real products that are specific for our type of hair and are known to be great for hair. We will take our time to work through your hair. Detangling, washing, detangling again and then styling so that there is no unnecessary pain and breakage. With the knowledge that each stylist has, your edges will not be pulled and your hair will be dealt with as gently as possible.

How to do Mini Twists on Natural hair

Another tutorial, yay. And I ‘m thinking I almost did not share this video. I recorded it about a month ago and guess what, my mini twists are still in yay. I don’t remember keeping mini twists for over 4 weeks. That’s a first for me. I was going through things you guys. Like real things. I just didn’t have the energy to do anything on the blog or channel. At one time, I almost just shut this all up. Close the blog and try to deal with me. But God sent an Angel my way to help me put my act together and stop the self pity thing. Yah I was in such a state. I’m not 100% where I would like to be, we never there hey? But I’m slowly getting there. Thanks to my real friends who have been a source of support during this trying time.

Styling African threading has always been a challenge for me. I mean, I’m very very close to 40 and I don’t want my hair looking like I’m in primary school. So the trick here is to make it look adultish so that me can enjoy wearing mine hair in some African threading  girl… And I love to challenge myself and being a creative, (sometimes I can’t sleep at night because my mind will be wondering too much) I came up with this style. Which is not completely new, but I added a twist to it so that it can apply to adult me.
