How to swim with African hair

Have you ever wanted to go swimming, but didn’t for fear of damaging your hair? The pool or the ocean looked so tempting, but you just knew your hair would be a nightmare to deal with later? Well, you should never have to worry about that again! Here are some tips and tricks on how to swim with African hair while still keeping it healthy and manageable.

Choose the perfect style

If you’re going to be swimming frequently, then it’s best to wear your hair in a protective style. I’d specifically recommend cornrows, as they are perfect for the water, but twists or knotless braids will absolutely work as well. These should prevent any tangling in your hair. There’s nothing worse than only swimming for 20 minutes and then spending hours detangling afterwards! If you aren’t wearing a protective style, you can quickly throw your hair up into chunky twists or French braids for a temporary way to prevent tangling.

Saturate your hair

Both chlorine and salt water have a tendency to dry out hair, and cause breakage and split ends. Afro hair is apt to behave like a sponge, and will absorb that water with all the damaging chemicals in it. To stop this, pre-soak your hair with water and some conditioner. Your hair should be so full of normal water, there’s no space for it to absorb the pool/sea water!

Wear a swimming cap

Now that you’ve got the perfect style, you can fit it under a swimming cap. Up until recently, fitting lots of hair into a swimming cap was a battle, but now there are many brands with swimming caps specifically designed to fit black hair styles. With a good swimming cap, you can really minimize the amount of water coming into contact with your hair – ensuring your hair stays safe and sound while swimming!

Cleanse hair afterwards

After swimming, you’ll want to get any contaminated water out of your hair ASAP! Rinse your hair with clean water as soon as you’re done swimming, to displace any chlorinated or salt water. Then, wash your hair with a sulphate-free shampoo and use a moisturising conditioner for the best results. If you’re swimming frequently, it might not be best to do a full wash after each swim. Instead, just rinse and condition after swimming, and only do a proper wash every now and then.

Lock in moisture

The biggest concern when swimming in the heat is dry hair. With a combination of the chemicals in the water, the hot sun and the humidity in the air, our hair is almost guaranteed to dry out and become brittle. That’s why I’d recommend locking in moisture by layering conditioner, cream and oil in your hair. This will keep your hair soft and hydrated, even on days when you aren’t going out to swim.

You should never have to choose between looking good and having fun. With a little bit of preparation, you can do both! Go have fun visiting the beach or sitting at the poolside, with the knowledge that your hair is just as happy and healthy as you!

Learn how to flat twist with inverted bun

Learning a new skill is always good. What’s even better is when that skill can actually put food on your table or just earn you that extra cash so that you can get that project finally started. For me, doing hair has been my source of income for so many years. Okay, I didn’t exactly get paid when I did hair when I was still in primary school. But all the same, I have been doing hair for a long time. When I was in college, I was in residence at the college, I would spend most of my weekends doing hair. That kept me away from mischief and I never ran out of cash as much as my clients were mostly cash strapped college girls. Those were the good old days.

In this post, I am showing you how to do a flat twist on natural hair. Flat twists with your own hair are the best protective style there is no matter how you look at it. when it comes to the health of the hair and scalp at least. They can also look cute and if you have the length and volume, you are really spoilt for choice when it comes to styles. There is no pulling of the hair, there is no tension on the hairline or scalp, so no inflammation of the scalp, the hair is tucked away and yet it is kept stretched to make sure single strand knots are kept at bay. Which other protective style ticks all the boxes like that?

Flat Twists with extensions

Actually, when recovering from a receding hairline due to traction alopecia, this is the best hairstyle to wear. So make sure to ask your stylist to do flat twists if you are trying to grow your hairline.

This is a very easy hairstyle actually especially if you are not adding any hair extensions. I always work on wet hair. Guys! there is no need to blow dry the hair just to do a hairstyle like this. For the sake of the health of the hair, work on damp hair.

If you can do 2 strand twists, then learning to do flat twists will be easier for you. Because, the flat twist version is actually just picking up hair along  the section as you twist. How you are going to be hold the hair as well will be just a bit different. Check the video below on how I hold the hair. This allows for an effortless picking of the hair as you go along.

 

And yes, it becomes better the more you practice. You know you can get a practice head for under R100 in Jo’burg? Okay, it will not have a lot of hair on it and the hair will also be very straight and synthetic. But for the purpose of learning different hairstyles, you can start there before you can afford to get one that has a curlier texture and easier to learn African hairstyles on. Of course it comes at a heftier price.

For real beginners, concentrate only on doing a 2 strand twist while picking up hair as you go along a section. Do not worry about how tight or loose it is. Even how neat it is. Once you master how your fingers are going to be moving and working together to do the flat twist, then you can work on making it tighter and neater. I promise, you will get the grip of it with time. I did too.

Tips on how to flat twist well.

  • Find the direction that you are comfortable to twist in and stick to it. Rather work on perfecting that.
  • Make sure you are working on well detangled hair so that you don’t run into any snags or knots along a section.
  • keep the sections small until you master the technique
  • Keep your parts neat and clean. Use a gel or edge tamer if you need to
  • Practice, practice, practice. That’s the best way to better your craft.

What is normal hair

Forgive me. I need to understand something. What is normal hair? What is more normal than the hair that comes out from my scalp? Is your normal more normal than my normal? Because, we are different and because we are different, my normal is also different to your normal.

Clicks Advert

The Clicks advert, which has since been taken down is marketing gone terrible wrong. What pisses me off more is, how come they did not pick it up before publishing? For such a big company, surely they have a whole marketing department and content goes for approval before it is ready for publishing. Why did this go without being picked? What’s the make up of the marketing department decision makers?

The advert was racist to say the least. Calling a hair type normal after only mentioning negatives on another hair type is blatant racism. All hair types have issues and that advert should have only been published after both implied message and the comprehensive message had been assessed to make sure it does not appear racist or become derogatory to other people.

Because, with some things, if you know you know. And if you don’t know, you don’t know. And the impact some words may have on a disadvantaged community or a community which has suffered inhuman treatment, segregation and especially in South Africa, the demonic apartheid system, is one of those things that you cannot just know because you read a book.

You need to to get there, sometime walk in their shoes, listen and be open to understand how they feel and I am sorry, an apology and diversity training alone will not do it. I like what the Minister of Small Business Development Ntshavheni said. And to quote

“Clicks misses the point that the offence is not only about the images that are insensitive but the fact that it represents the views of TRESemmé that are racists, and reflects the continued undermining of the beauty of African women and the violence they suffer when they are deemed not meeting certain superficial standards.

“Therefore to pull down the advert and issue a public apology cannot cut it. Clicks must remove the TRESemmé product from its shelves as an expression of their disassociation with suppliers who promote racist and insensitive marketing.”

The removal of TRESemmé products from several retail shops and the move by Clicks to expand their offering on local small brands is so welcome. It’s something that should have been prioritised a long time ago though. It didn’t really need to come to this so that local brands are also welcome in big retail shops. I hope this will also give a chance to some of us who have been praying for a break into the big retail shops. And, it will be great if other big retail shops also follow suit.

In a country with a majority being black people, I want to assume Clicks has some black women who should have known the advert leaves a bad taste in the mouth. And, apparently there were 2 black employees and a coloured manager who approved the advert as well. So, what happened? What’s the culture in the organisation?

I think, what companies need these days is a consultant. Someone they can ask before going to press so that they can make sure all boxes are checked. Especially when dealing with sticky  issues like hair, skin colour, race and gender.

Do this to grow your hair

A lot of times people ask me what I am using to grow my hair. Indeed, what I am using may work for you too, most times it does. However, it may not work at all and, what I am using is not all that is aiding my hair to retain length. It’s how I use the products, my general health and what else I do to my hair. I tell people I wash my hair 2 to 3 times a week when I am not in braids and, I’m met with astonished eyes. Well, that’s what I do and you may not need to do that at all.

So, if you were expecting me to tell you the one size fits all formula to grow your hair, I am so sorry. That does not exist. While others can get tailbone hair from using rice water, others taking Biotin supplements and some using grease or any other commercial  hair product, it’s not a one word or product answer at all.

Growing hair very long first of all depends on your genes which play a big part in determining your hair growth cycle. If your hair is in growth phase only for 2 years and then it rests before shedding, with the average growth rate of hair, half an inch or 12.7 mm a month you may realise about 30 cm of growth that’s if you will retain all the length.

I don’t mean to bust your bubble here. But, let’s be realistic. The good thing is, most people have a 4 to 6 years growth phase. Which means after 4 years, you should have about 60 cm  and that’s 24 inches of length if you retained all your length and you did not trim in the 4 years.

But that’s not the case with a lot of people. No, it’s not. Even I don’t get much length retention. Oh I wish. That’s where good hair practices, how you take care of your hair, the products you use and your general health comes into play.

Mind you, if these things are on the positive, even if the genes are not on your side, you will have the best hair that you can ever have. It will be healthier, shinier and your own beautiful hair.

Here are a few things that you can do to get your best hair. Well, just 20 of them. It may seem like too much but, implementing one at a time really changes the game for your hair. In no time, you will be doing this stuff without even thinking about it.

  1. Wash or cleanse your hair often. A clean scalp grows healthier hair.
  2. If your hair is too dry, wash your hair with a moisturising conditioner every week and only use a shampoo once a month.
  3. Deep condition regularly, or every time you wash your hair. Helps for stronger hair that is not prone to breakage.
  4. A protein treatment once a month is essential. It builds strength into your strands
  5. Detangle your hair using your fingers first before brushing or combing it. That way, you can feel the tangles and untangle them instead of ripping through your hair with a comb or brush.
  6. Always add conditioner to your hair before detangling. Detangling dry hair always leads to unnecessary breakage.
  7. Use a wide toothed comb or a detangling brush. Fine combs always lead to breakage that could have been avoided.
  8. Trim when there is need to trim. Trimming too often will rob you of any length you could have retained. Not trimming when you need to will result in hair splitting even more.
  9. Massage your scalp, either when you apply product or as a pre shampoo treatment. It encourages blood circulation and nutrients will get to your hair follicles.
  10. Base your scalp with oil, Shea butter or grease. Yes, you read that right. Grease works as well. Just make sure you don’t apply too much because it may block your pores. Otherwise, some of the flakes are just as a result of dry scalp. So, just as you apply cream to your skin after bathing, your scalp also needs something to retain moisture.
  11. When you can, keep your hair stretched as much as possible. Shrunken hair tends to form single strand knots. These may lead to breakage.
  12. Avoid tight hairstyles. Besides causing a headache and robbing you of a good night’s sleep, they cause hair loss as well.
  13. Use quality products that agree with your hair. Don’t get onto every craze just because it’s working for other people. Prove them of course, by all means. But if it does not work for you, no need to force things. And when you find a product that your hair likes, stick to it.
  14. Have a routine that you can stick to as well. That blends well with your hair needs and your lifestyle.
  15. Lock in moisture in your hair to prevent dryness. I normally use a leave in conditioner and then an oil or butter to seal moisture.
  16. Style your hair in a protective style most times. It can be a long term protective style braids or twists with extensions or a shorter term protective style, for example, flat twists or chunky twists or braids.
  17. Exercise regularly. It increases blood circulation to all parts of your body, including your hair.
  18. Get adequate sleep. It affects a lot of things including our hormones which tend to affect hair growth as well as general health.
  19. Eat well, drink enough water.
  20. Find ways to manage your stress. Stress also leads to hair loss.

There we go, as much as you may not have tailbone long hair in 4 years, doing the above will surely give you the best hair that you can possibly have. Your hair will in no doubt benefit even if you just include some of these into your hair care routine.

Needle & Thread Cornrows

I have added a bit of spice to the usual needle and thread cornrows so it looks chic and really cute. You know, when you have just finished a job, in this case, a hairstyle, and you tell yourself, “Yeah, this is beautiful.” That’s what I felt when I finished this hairstyle. To tell you that when I started doing the hair, I had only a slight idea on how I was going to do the hair, otherwise the final look, even I was in shock. When I do hair, it is kind of an empty canvas and although I will be having an idea on what to create, the style changes as I go along. And this is what happened here as well.

I did a combination of techniques here to create this protective hairstyle but what I wanted to showcase is the needle & thread technique. I also used good old cornrows and crocheting of synthetic hair onto cornrows and African threading. Wow! that’s quite a combination. Didn’t realise it until I wrote it down. When I posted the video on YouTube, it got quite a good response and some of the comments are requests for me to post more beginner friendly videos of the needle and thread technique. A Clip on Ponytail | How to.

There’s a girl that comes to the shop to buy some products and she has very beautiful hairstyles. Easy, after wash hairstyles that allow her to literally wash and go. What she uses to make them look chic, a clip on ponytail. Instead of doing my usual, ponytail holder method of attaching an Afro textured ponytail on my sleeked hair, I had always wanted to make a clip on ponytail and just couldn’t find the time to do it. When one of the ladies in the salon offered to assist, I was overjoyed. And we did it. This is the same clip on ponytail that I used in the Valentine post that I did recently.

I used the Darling hair Curly kinky hair piece that is so close to stretched kinky hair it is so scary. A lot of people could not even differentiate between my hair and the clip on. Not joking. Check out the picture above. The front is my real hair. How does it compare with the ponytail?

I made the ponytail cap myself from fabric I bought locally. You can try and look for a real ponytail cap though. I just could not find any, that’s why I decided to make it. The hair was crocheted on to the cap and the process took about an hour. An easy and very fast process. If you would like to learn how to do that, make sure to watch the video. A protective Style on a Budget

Hey! Hey! It’s the festive season and our hair, well my hair and a lot of people who have been visiting my Salon in the past days, also goes festive. The colour, the style and everything needs to reflect the season we are in. Right? I know, your budget may not allow for a lot of play when it comes to funky hairstyles and you may be feeling down and out. Well, don’t be. Come out to play. There is a lot that can be done with a limited budget. With just R80 or less, you can create this hairstyle too. If you have the crochet hook and thread of course. If you don’t have a crochet hook, a bobby pin will do as well. I’m not kidding. I did a video tutorial using a bobby pin to do crochet braids some moons back and you may want to watch it. Otherwise, get yourself a crochet hook. It’s not too costly. Get it here.

One million braid

In the video, I used just under 2 packs of Darling hair in colour T30 and that will cost you  way less than R80 if you get it yourself from the shops and not from a hair salon. If at a hair salon, prices may vary. That’s also part of where they get their profit from. Sourcing hair for clients. You are going to need a bit of time as well to prepare the hair and do the installation. In total, about 4 hours. But, you’re probably on holiday anyway and that should not be a problem.


So, here is the process. I braided the straight one million Darling braid and then put it in hot water so that it could curl according to the braid. I then dried it and unravelled the braid to release some amazing curls and crocheted the curly hair to my natural hair. Viola. Watch the video. It is very visual and more step by step than I can ever be able to explain.

Needle & Thread Flat Twist Tutorial

Alright. I don’t know what happened there seriously. I posted a video on YouTube and never got to let you guys know that there is a new video on my channel. How could I? I think the more you need to subscribe and turn on the notifications so that you don’t miss any videos I upload from now. But I will also try my best not to let life get in the way and always follow protocol. Who said running 3 businesses while being a mom and wife is easy? That’s why I am a woman right. I have the WOMAN super power. But eish, even when you have super powers, somethings slip in the cracks of your duties. Ngiyaxolisa.

So, back to the video, it was actually requested by some of you. That’s the reason I did it. In the video, I show you how I did a flat twist look alike using a needle and thread and I also used some added hair or hair extensions so that her flat twists look fuller and the hang at the back of her hair is longer. I had never done a flat twist using a needle and thread with added hair extension to it. So, I was figuring it out as I went along. It came out really nice and I am glad I recorded it even the first time doing it because we learn the lessons together.

I have done the hairstyle on very short hair at the salon, Nashe Hair Studio before and numerous times before then, growing up as an African child who knows to do hair. It was a style used when the hair is extremely short and you still want it plaited. Maybe you are a bride’s maid, flower girl at a wedding, or you went to a school that insisted on short hair even for the girls and you want some form of hairstyle for the holidays. Needle and thread hairstyles were a go to style for you. Otherwise, you’ll be told to grow your hair a little bit more for any other style. Of course it can also be done on longer hair and if you would like to give this method a go, check out the video.

Bubble Ponytail Tutorial

One of the things that I promised myself I would do after exams was play in my hair. So, I’ve been trying out different hairstyles that I’ve been dying to try but had no time on my hands to do so or I would feel so guilty doing instead of studying. The bubble ponytail is one of those which I tried out some time earlier this month and it was such a wow moment for me actually. I posted the images on Instagram and Facebook and a lot of people loved it as well. So, I decided to do a tutorial for you guys so that you can see how I do it. And, you never know, you may find some hairstyle inspiration as well.

I did the hairstyle on stretched hair which I stretched using African threading, aka Benny and Betty, aka amaphondo, aka mabhanzi, aka mangongo. Wow, it you don’t know what that is after all the explanation, then you just have to watch the video so you can see this heatless method that is used to stretch African natural hair. I also used Marley hair for my ponytail, which I think is not just a ponytail but actually a mohawk with a ponytail. I also used hair ties to secure the Marley hair onto my hair and also to do the bubbles to make it a bubble ponytail.

How I save cash for rainy days and long term goals.

I had mentioned in an earlier post that I save and save and save such that when it begins to rain, financially, I have somewhere to run for cover. I learnt to save quite a long time ago, thanks to a women’s day event that I attended way back that put that desire and needing to save in my mind. If I don’t save anything in a month, I feel as if I have failed so dismally. And I mean even R100. So, that seldom happens because I have managed to at least save that.

I know there are a lot of people who say they don’t have anything to save but believe me, that’s just an excuse. Hear me out. If you are getting some money every month, then there is something to save. It may be little, but you can be able to save that first. And once you start, you will notice that you will actually be able to save more as you get excited about how your money is growing. Trust me, by then you wish you could save every cent that comes your way. When I opened my savings account, my first deposit was R300 and I would transfer R100 every month to that account because I thought I did not have much to save. By the time it was R3000 plus in my savings account, I started putting in any lump sum that came my way at any time. In no time, my savings went into double digits. Then there was no stopping.

So here are a few ways you can save as well.

  • Save first before anything else. I know, you may think that is not practical but that is the only way you will be able to save for your goals. You know what you need to save every month for you to go on holiday, buy a car or a house and the time you have to save all the money you need. Put a plan into place so that you can be able to save first before you spend the money. If you begin by spending your money before you look at how much to save, the next moment you look, there will be nothing left to save.
  • Budget your spending. Even if you don’t follow it to the dot, you will always know how much you have to spend on stuff. If you allowed for eating out on your budget, when the money allocated to eating out is spent on the first 2 outings, you will know not to go out again because the budget set aside for eating out will have already been spent. Budgeting will also allow you to look at your expenditure comprehensively which will help you cut on unnecessary expenditure. If you don’t know how to budget, there are a lot of apps on your phone to track your expenditure and help you budget. When you budget, set aside savings there and transfer the money to a savings account.
  • Yes, a separate savings account that you don’t hold a card for preferably and it is just for savings. I like how First National Bank opens their cheque accounts. They automatically open 2 accounts for you. One is your transaction account and the other is a savings account that has no debit card and you can’t pay anyone from it. It is connected to your main account. I love that. Separating the money into different accounts helps you not over spend as you swipe for things in shops and all. You will know that your money is finished. What is left are savings and if you need to tap into your savings, then you do it consciously.
  • Have a long term savings account like a fixed deposit or a money market linked account where you save money for long term projects like buying a car or a house. I have a 32 day account for such long term savings and there I save for our long term goals. I also have a savings account that I can access the money any day and any time. This is the one earmarked for rainy days. A lady who presented at the women’s day event I said earlier, asked us if we had money that we could access right away if we needed it for an emergency? Most of us said no and right there, I knew I had to do something. I started putting money aside that I could use on a really rainy day. Which is the other thing. You can’t take that money to take your family out or something you can do without.
  • You need discipline. If the money you are saving is to allow you to go on holiday, then make sure you only take it out for that. If it’s for buying a car then a car it will buy. If it’s for emergencies in the family like sickness, burst pipe or something you need to spend cash on with urgency, then you can keep it for that. The thing is, if you don’t do that, you may not reach your goal or be able to cope with a rainy day. There will always be stuff to spend money on and if you don’t watch it, you may be spending your savings on things that you don’t really need and your savings goals will never be reached.
  • Lastly, I am not a financial adviser and I am not intending to be one. I am just sharing with you some of the things that have worked for me to make sure I have the money for school fees in January, buy uniforms and other emergency expenses that may need funding.
