Hey!! I hope you are well. Recently I did a wash and go on my type 4 hair and posted some pictures on Intagram and Facebook. The post got some good engagement and some people were asking how I achieved the wash n go. So I decided to share with you the how part, the products I used and all. Which is not much but still worth sharing.

I started off with a Bentonite treatment on wet hair. Wore a plastic cap and sat under a hooded dryer for some extra heat for about 10 minutes. Not sure if it was necessary to sit under the dryer but that’s what I did because I had no time and I thought, “Let me speed this treatment up a bit” Otherwise, when I do a Bentonite treatment, I normally leave it in for at least 30 minutes. I then rinsed out the treatment and conditioned my hair. I always condition my hair after a Bentonite treatment. I know some say it is not necessary but I just feel my hair needs the conditioner so I give it that.

After conditioning, my hair was wrapped in those T-shirt towels that NMHair Studio uses to bloat out excess water from the hair. Kind of, in place of a towel. I then applied a leave-in conditioner on my hair whilst wet, liberally. Not even doing section by section. Remember, I didn’t have much time on my hands. I needed to take my brother to Johannesburg Parkstation and I could not afford to be late. And that’s all I did. Nothing more. You see? It was a real wash and go. Not the one that involves a hundred and ten steps to achieve. In this case I was literally going to the Parkstation.

The whole washing scene happened at NMHair Studio, a natural hair salon at Natural Moisture. Here is a list of the products used.

When I left NMHair Studio, I thought I was going to come back from Jo’burg and do my hair properly. But, when I got back, my hair looked great and the curls were popping popping. So I left it alone. That evening, I lightly spritzed it with my home made spritzer, wore my satin bonnet and went to bed. In the morning, I lightly spritzed again, picked my hair using my fingers and voila, I was ready for the day. This style went all the way up to day 4 and I was actually surprised. If it were not for me wanting things too much and could not wait for another hairstyle, I could have pulled it off a week and some.

My spritzer has water, leave-in conditioner, glycerine and black castor oil. This mix works well especially if shrinkage is the style because it has glycerine. With the humidity that was going on around that time, it was the very best for my hair. Lots of moisture being channeled to my kinks.

Wash ‘n’ go. A Love-hate Relationship

I like wash n go’s. I really do. But, there’s always pay back time and every time I do a wash n go, I know I will pay dearly. I know there are some people who manage to do wash n go’s all the way and have not mentioned having any problems. Somehow, I do it at a cost. The knots, single strand knots, aka SSK’s. These guys are a menace you know? But I’m sure that’s not going to stop me from wearing my hair in a wash n go from time to time though. I need them in my life. They complete the versatility that natural hair has to offer.

I shared my pics on Instagram and some friends wanted to know what I did on my wash n go this time. I did not record the process but I’m going to try and let you through the process. I hope you will be able to follow.

How I did my wash n go.

I deep conditioned then co-washed my hair with a conditioner that has great slip. It’s no name right now because it’s one of my formulations that I am working on.
Wrapped my hair in a Moisture T’Towel to get rid of excess water.
Then I went on to apply a leave-in conditioner. I used Ultimate organics Olive oil leave in conditioner which also has amazing slip.
I went on to apply as much ecostyler gel as possible on my hair in sections, starting at the roots and smoothing it towards the ends. Then I would run my fingers through the section to separate the hair where the curls clump naturally.
I started at the back of my head working towards the front. And then let my hair air dry.

Night routine with a wash n go.

On the first night, My hair was barely dry so I tied a scarf round my edges to make sure they stay intact and hit the pillow. I have a satin pillowcase by the way so I can afford not to wrap my head from time to time especially in times like these. I kept my wash n go for 6 days which is wow according to my standards.
On the other 4 nights, lightly spritzed my hair to make it softer and more malleable and put up my hair into 5 ponytails.
Sometimes I would band these ponytails for some extra stretch but mostly I was not bothered. I then wrapped my hair in a scarf or slapped on a satin bonnet.

Morning Routine with a wash n go

Mornings were easy. I simply removed my ponytail holders, fluffed my curls and out I went.

I enjoyed the ride this time and although I had to deal with SKK’s afterwards, Somehow, my hair stayed detangled mostly so it did not interfere with my finger detangling challenge. And the more I do wash n go’s the more I become better at it. My first wash n go was pitiful. Hopefully, I will be able to come up with a way of enjoying wash n go’s without having to deal with SKK’s. Or maybe you know how, please share. Otherwise that’s all from me. Love, peace, blessings.

Check my hand at short term protective styling on straight hair. I am not used to dealing with straight hair at all since I am always in twist outs and mini twists. Anyways, a skill can always be learnt considering I cannot really do much of twist -outs or mini twists because of my pitiful ends. Life has to move on right. I think this style came out really cute and I am proud of myself big time. Not bad for a novice. So here we go…

Hey. Hope you had a restful holiday and you are ready for 2014. Mine was very restful and I kind of shut down all functions related to work, the blog and the online shop. So here I am, well rested and full of energy for the new year. I however did not neglect my hair during the holidays. I continued to give it the best care I can possibly give to it and I would remember this blog and the need to share the stuff I was doing to my hair so I still took some pics and recorded a few videos. One of the things I did was wear my hair in a wash n go. Yey, I finally did it.
