Wow!! Winter is finally over and we are well into summer in this part of the world. While winter gives our stresses a hard time, with all the dryness, excessive cold and indoor heating that is usually very dry and damaging to our hair, summer has its own set of problems although they are not many.

I personally enjoy summer because I don’t have to worry about my hair breaking a lot since our summers are wet and the humidity can be quite high. But here is something that I only found out recently on what we should watch out for in summer. The ultraviolet radiation which is part of the electromagnetic (light) spectrum that reaches the earth from the sun can also do a lot of damage to our hair. It is important to wear a hat or some sort of protection if you are going to be out enjoying the African sun for longer periods. I have heard of some hair creams which contain some form of sun screen but have not come across any or maybe I was just not looking for them. But yah, we need to protect our hair in some way.

We should not give up on maintaining our hair moisture as well now that winter is over. It is time to treat hair with extra care so as to rejuvenate its health if winter was not so kind to it. I suggest listening to your hair still to establish what it really needs this summer. Some people opt for lighter oils in summer and heavier oils like castor oil and even some grease too in winter. The choice is all yours. I do not normally change my regimen in summer or winter.  I will however do a lot less shampooing or co-washing this summer because I am wearing my hair in twists as a protective style (To protect my hair from my hands). I have noticed that if I do weekly co-washing, my twists look so old I can only keep them on for two weeks at most. I do not really have the time to re-twist so I will be deep conditioning and co-washing fortnightly. I hope it will work out since I will still be moisturising every week and spritzing it with my combination of oils and water. I also have to incorporate scarves and hats when I am out in the sun.

What are you doing this summer to keep your hair healthy and at its best? Please do weigh in. Your contribution will surely help someone and is much appreciated. Whatever it is, please share.

So here is to a healthy hair summer!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers.
