When you set off on a journey, you have a goal set as well which will guide you to keep on track and motivate you not to give up along the way. One of the benefits of documenting one’s journey is the availability of records which inform you on how much progress you are making in getting to your desired goal and if you are still on the right path. On my hair journey, upon visiting these records, I noticed that my hair needs some extra TLC thus the need of a Healthy, Thicker, Longer hair challenge #HTL. When I went natural, my goal was healthier hair, thicker hair to give me some big hair and longer hair. My hair was doing fine earlier in 2013 but towards the end, I noticed I did not have much of the thickness anymore, I did not retain much length and I was inundated with dry split ends. I have attributed the condition of my hair to post partum shedding, wearing my hair out a lot and not managing stress in the best of ways in 2013. I want 2014 to be different and although there is nothing I could have done about post partum shedding, there is a lot I could have done to minimise its effects by doing more protective styling, washing my hair often and keeping my scalp clean and healthy. This will therefore make up the core of my hair challenge. I am going to be a bit more committed to the health of my hair, listen to it more and keep true to good hair practices. I am to be on this hair challenge for 12 months starting in March 2014 all the way to February 2015. I will do periodic length checks and let you know what I am up to on this challenge.

You have probably heard of grape seed oil (GSO) which comes from pressed grape seeds. You already know that it is odorless, colorless, has a non-greasy texture, relatively cheap and can be found in supermarkets and health stores wherever you go, well, today I want to share with you the wonderful benefits this light weight oil has to our hair.
Hey! Did you know what relaxers do to your hair to achieve the straight hair look? Let me let you in on some nuggets of information that I found from my research and put together for you. Now I do not hate against relaxed heads. What is on your head is yours and you can do what you want with it depending on your convictions. What I am doing is putting the information out so that when you do relax your hair, you are informed of what is happening.
I twisted my hair. Again. No matter how much I want to stay from mini twists, I just end up doing them hey. This is mainly because I have mastered how to do them myself so they are a cheap option. The other thing is, they are very easy and fast to undo and styling them every morning is not as time consuming as free hair. They are a very good protective, low manipulation style as well and although they frustrate me sometimes because my hair is unable to keep them looking smart for at least a month, it is my go to protective style. And, this time around, I did them a little different from the previous times to try and combat the problem areas of our relationship.
It’s winter time in South Africa and all the hype of protective styling is with us. Protective styles are a great way to retain length because they protect your hair against either the harsh weather elements, over manipulation or rubbing against your clothes which tend to hurt your ends and cause breakage. You may protect your ends in so many different ways, like, cornrows, braids, twists, bun, or weaves, whether you choose to add extensions or not, the list is not exhaustive. However, for you to get maximum benefits from a protective style, you need to make sure the fundamentals of healthy hair care are still adhered to. There are so many things that people do or neglect to do when their mane is in a protective style and though they gain some length after they undo their twists or braids, in about two weeks, all their gained length seems to be lost to breakage and their hair just seems to be going nowhere. Sounds familiar? Here are some tips you need to know to win with protective styling.
Hey you all. I HOPE I find you well and today we have HOPE in the house. Yey! this is so amazing. You know, I have so much wanted to interview Hope on her hair journey for quite some time and finally here it is, an exclusive from the owner and founder of HopefulInteriors. Let me admit. I have known Hope for about five years or so and the first time I saw her Fro, I was really taken back. It was so awesome and well taken care of I can say. It was looking really great and right there I knew I also wanted natural healthy hair like hers. She is one of those people who inspired me to go natural and when I was transitioning, I still remember asking her for some tips and didn’t those tips work hey? Anyway without pre-emptying the interview, let’s get on with it.
Hey you all. So I have been a little undecided on how to protect my hair this winter. A little bit late I would say but this year I wanted to stay away from extensions because my hair has quite some length to work with. So at first, twists were going to be my protective style. However, last week I did my mini twists as usual but in just over a week, they were looking horrible I just had to wear a hat to work. So much for a 4 hour stint, twisting my hair. Now, I don’t mind the hat to work thing but I just don’t want to wear a hat because my hair is in a sorry state. I want to wear it because it goes well with what I am wearing or I want to keep warm. This prompted me to revisit my decision hence the indecision.
For a natural head, glycerine or any product containing glycerine is a “use at your own risk” or is that so? Many naturals have a love hate relationship with glycerine and being one myself, I really do feel you. It has caused many a bad hair day for me when a supposed to be twist out or braid out becomes so mushy, frizzy and my hair shrinks to like 50% and as usual I end up going to plan B. So, to say I love glycerine, umm, not always I am afraid. But I don’t hate it either. It usually leaves my hair so soft and I can really feel that it is well moisturized when I spritz or spray with a glycerine containing product.
I have been wearing my hair in twists for just over three weeks now and I think it is time to remove them before those knots and ugly tangles really set in. I wash my hair once a week even when I have my hair twisted and three washes is sure recipe for matted hair and detangling is normally an uphill task to say the least. Let me confess, I am not yet decided on how I will protect my hair for winter. I may do the twists again but right now, I am quite tempted to cornrow my hair and just wrap my hair with a scarf on cold days. Not sure though if it suits my frame but I want to try that.
