When you set off on a journey, you have a goal set as well which will guide you to keep on track and motivate you not to give up along the way. One of the benefits of documenting one’s journey is the availability of records which inform you on how much progress you are making in getting to your desired goal and if you are still on the right path. On my hair journey, upon visiting these records, I noticed that my hair needs some extra TLC thus the need of a Healthy, Thicker, Longer hair challenge #HTL. When I went natural, my goal was healthier hair, thicker hair to give me some big hair and longer hair. My hair was doing fine earlier in 2013 but towards the end, I noticed I did not have much of the thickness anymore, I did not retain much length and I was inundated with dry split ends. I have attributed the condition of my hair to post partum shedding, wearing my hair out a lot and not managing stress in the best of ways in 2013. I want 2014 to be different and although there is nothing I could have done about post partum shedding, there is a lot I could have done to minimise its effects by doing more protective styling, washing my hair often and keeping my scalp clean and healthy. This will therefore make up the core of my hair challenge. I am going to be a bit more committed to the health of my hair, listen to it more and keep true to good hair practices. I am to be on this hair challenge for 12 months starting in March 2014 all the way to February 2015. I will do periodic length checks and let you know what I am up to on this challenge.
Johannesburg
We had a fabulous time you guys this last weekend of the 22nd of February 2014. Yes I know, guilty as charged. I did not share with you guys on this blog that I was going to go to the very first Healthy Hair Indaba which was held here in Johannesburg. I should have hey? I however shared on Facebook and on Twitter. Anyway, I went and I really did enjoy myself. The things we discussed were so valuable. We went through quite a lot of stuff although there was not much time to go really deep on each topic. I tell you, there is never enough time when it comes to talking about hair. There were questions asked and the 5 organisers who were, Wissal, Carise, Aisha, Tendayi and Kavuli tried to answer most of them , with some help from the floor ofcourse. One can never know everything.
Hey guys! So, I was asked to do a review on T444Z when I attended the AIHE in Johannesburg on the 31st of August 2013. I am not big on basing my scalp and the DIY thing has gotten into me so much. So when I was asked to do the review, I kind of thought twice about it and when I read the ingredients, with the likes of Shea butter and other natural products in it, I ended up taking the offer. Wasn’t I glad to do a review on this wonderful product.
As you may know, Natural Sisters hosted a hair meet-up on the 7th of December 2013 together with Fatsani and Serati. It was a blast and The Lord blessed our quest to meet each other and share the knowledge on our natural hair. It was an unexpected success with all the glitches and time changes and all. However, some wonderful ladies managed to come and we had lot’s of fun and we discussed everything hair. The food, though not over the moon, was okay. Maybe I was expecting too much with the way Boston BBQ gets so filled with people and it is so difficult to find a booking. Anyway, we had a wonderful time and a Big Thank you to all attendees.

It is a Saturday morning and I am at Woodmead Shopping Center in Northern Johannesburg. I have a number of errands I need to do and quickly go home and be with my boys. I have just left Dischem Pharmacy and I am rushing down towards Ackermans to get some playing clothes for the boys. I pass by Debonair’s Pizza and right there through the window something amazing catches my attention. I stop. Yes a complete stop. Could that be it, yes it is. It is hey. It is her hair. I am like wow! So much hair, so thick, so full. I tell myself I am going to have to go and speak to her. Or maybe just to say “Hi.” Just then, she stands up, clutches her handbag and walks towards the exit.
“Okay Ruth, your chance” I meet her and the other lady she is with at the exit. I hesitate a bit, then I manage to say “Hi, I like your hair” She is stunned at first and then she says, “Aaw thank you.” I hesitate again on whether I should I ask her or not. I figure out the worst she can say is a straight no. That would not hurt me right? So I take up courage to go ahead and ask her. “Can I take you some pictures for my blog?” Now I have never done this to complete strangers so please understand my fear. My request takes her back, and surprise is written all over her face. I quickly step in again and tell her a bit about my blog on natural hair and she says, “As long as you will not write something negative about my hair” “Of course not, I assure her. I am a natural myself and although I am in twists right now, this is how my hair looks like most days.” I show her a pic on my phone. I don’t blame her, someone in Walton’s had just asked me if it was my hair or I had put extensions in.
After seeing my hair, her stance is softer and she agrees happily to pose for some photos. We start talking in a more relaxed manner and I learn that the other lady is in fact her daughter and happens to be natural as well although her hair is in braids. The mother’s name is Ivy and the daughter is Mpho.
I take my photos, I give them my site address and I take Mpho’s email address so I can also send them the pics. We part ways and I am really proud of myself that I managed to do it. Not so scary after all. Enjoy the photos of a mother and daughter, wearing their hair natural in Jozi. Thanks again Ivy and Mpho Shwatja.
Natural Sisters met up with this beautiful lady with gorgeous hair and as you know, not all hair is the same but hearing/reading other people’s experiences may help you along your journey, so I decided to drop her a few lines she could answer to and let us in on her journey. Please read on and enjoy, comment and show love!
Hey friends. My Afro is out and about. Enjoying the fresh air, though not sure about the cold Johannesburg mornings and the evening indoor heating. I removed the braids because they were so untidy just after two weeks having them. I am relieved to have them off and I kind of missed my hair as well. So I am happy to see my hair. Yey! I removed my braids on Monday night, and then wore my hair in a big bun the next day to work.
For a natural head, glycerine or any product containing glycerine is a “use at your own risk” or is that so? Many naturals have a love hate relationship with glycerine and being one myself, I really do feel you. It has caused many a bad hair day for me when a supposed to be twist out or braid out becomes so mushy, frizzy and my hair shrinks to like 50% and as usual I end up going to plan B. So, to say I love glycerine, umm, not always I am afraid. But I don’t hate it either. It usually leaves my hair so soft and I can really feel that it is well moisturized when I spritz or spray with a glycerine containing product.
