Ngemvelo Launches Another Salon

by Evenes Ruth Mafupa

As more and more of us go natural or choose to grow our hair as it grows from our scalp, the more the need for salons that answer to the dynamics in African hair care. So, it’s by no surprise that salons which formally did relaxers mainly to also tap into the natural hair space. But for me, Afro specialist salons stand out more. Not sure if it’s the smell of relaxers and perms that make me repel to such naturally or the horrors I have heard that some stylists have sneaked in some relaxer chemical while conditioning the hair, to make the hair softer, thereby making their lives easier at styling the hair, much to the disappointment of the client. I am not sure hey. Anyways, Afro only salons are also coming up and in just about a year, Ngemvelo who opened their first salon in Vosloorous launched their second branch in Katlehong in March of this year and I was able to attend the launch. If you’re following me @ruthmafupa on instagram, twitter and facebook, this will be stale news to you. But I just thought to write it in a post anyways so I can share with you what they do, how they do it and some pictures of course.

Ngemvelo staff

Ngemvelo Afro Only Specialist salon specialises in Afro hair. As in, if you are transitioning from chemically treated hair to natural hair, then that’s the place to go. From dreadlocks, plaits, simple wash and style, monthly treatments, braids, twists and faux locks to African threading. They cater for both male and female natural hair care needs, from 2 years old kids. As long as it involves taking care of your kinky or curly hair as it comes out of your scalp, they will get you sorted.

Ngemvelo’s mantra is “No comb, no blower” So if you want your hair blow dried, flat ironed or any of that sort that involves heat, that will not happen. This I know though is not an issue for most naturals who actually don’t want to use heat regularly and combing is a no no for some. So having a salon with a model based on that is quite a relief for many.

The launch of the 2nd salon went well with their loyal customers within Katlehong who used to travel to Vosloorus coming to get their hair done and also taking advantage of the launch discounts on the day. I met a lady who is writing a thesis on African Hair for her Masters degree and had a short interview with her. It’s actually by chance that we met at the launch because she had written to me requesting an interview and was still to do it. She didn’t know I was going to be at the launch and there we both were. How God does His things though. Amazing. It’s uplifting to have African ladies specialising in the the study of African hair, natural hair and the society we live. The African story written by Africans.

Ngemvelo also uses Natural Moisture products and they have them for retail as well. So, there’s some continuity for you. If you use Natural Moisture products, you don’t have to switch quality with petroleum based products. When you go to get your hair done, you can also stock up on your home hair care essentials and save on shipping because all Natural Moisture products are sold at the same price as at the Natural Moisture online shop.

And here are some pictures from the launch. This was my first time to go to Katlehong. I need to do some local tourism you guys. To visit some of these places that are so near and waiting to be explored and seen. Hope that happens soon. Till next time, take a moment to think of how God has blessed your life and smile. Laughter is the best medicine ever. So make an effort to keep laughing. Even at yourself. For we all have those silly moments. Love God, love you, love your family, people around you and humanity. Love is more powerful than anything that we can ever think of. God bless you!

Hello Mary Jane

Thanks forfor getting in touch.
We are afro specialists. We do not specialise in dreadlocks. We don’t undo them.

For your locs, you only need the liquid black soap and some Nashe Organics Twist and Shine. No need for conditioner. You can order at http://www.natmoisture.co.za
