A Natural Approach To Psoriasis: Home Remedies

by Evenes Ruth Mafupa

If you are anything like me, for every situation or rather problem, you will always look for the natural approach to solve it especially when it comes to health issues. I am un-apologetically a home remedy kind of a girl. Although I know that natural solutions are not totally risk free and side effects free, I tend to trust them way more than the chemical alternatives. So you know I have your back covered because I went on to look for such solutions which help keep Psoriasis under control and also make sure you don’t lose any hair to this condition. Listed below are some of the home remedies that I came across.

Apple Cider Vinegar For Psoriasis

You can trust Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Rinses for a number of scalp issues and scalp psoriasis is one of them. ACV as is commonly called is both anti-fungal and anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. This means it helps to get rid of and prevent any infection that may be caused by the scaling and scratching on the scalp. It also has an acidic pH of roughly 2.9 which helps to stabilise the pH of the hair which has a pH of between 4.5 and 5.5. Besides being rich in Vitamin C, A, B1, & B6 , potassium & iron, it also has hydroxy acids which help to exfoliate the top layer of the skin. This makes ACV ideal for removing scales/dead skin on the scalp without damaging your hair. It is good for the hair shaft as well but that is a post for another day. To do an ACV rinse, all  you need is 1 measure of ACV to 3 measures of water in a spray bottle or jar. apply the mixture to your hair and scalp as the final rinse after washing your hair. You can choose to leave it on and style as desired or rinse the mixture out slightly after about 5 minutes. You can also drink ACV for better health. I normally take 2 Tbs ACV, 1 Tbs honey and 1/4 tsp cinnamon and a glass of warm water. A friend of mine takes this mixture chilled.

Turmeric For Psoriasis

The curcumin in turmeric fights chronic inflammation by reducing histamine levels. It blocks NF-kB which is responsible for turning on inflammation response in cells. You can get the benefits of curcumin in turmeric powder or in curcumin supplements. From Turmeic powder, all you need is a glass with warm water, add a teaspoon of honey, a teaspoon of tumeric and a sprinkle of black pepper and drink it. You can also use the same mixture to massage on your scalp. This is said to keep the inflammation from psoriasis at bay which will in turn give you a healthier scalp and less itching.

Garlic for Psoriasis

Garlic is a natural anti-inflammatory and many find relief from health issues when they use it either topically or ingested. Most psoriasis sufferers tend to have high arachidonic acid. Garlic inhibits lipoxygenase, an enzyme that combines with arachidonic acid and causes inflammation. Eating garlic daily or applying it to the affected area will reduce inflammation remarkably. Besides, garlic has allicin which is a sulphur compound  good for hair loss. So forget the smell and get yourself some garlic goodness More about garlic for hair

Adjusting Your Diet For Psoriasis

This is by all means the most important thing you can do to reduce inflammation in your body thereby reducing psoriasis flare ups. You may want to reduce or remove meats, dairy and sugar from your diet. Trust me, it all starts in your tummy. The war between the good bacteria and the bad bacteria. The bacteria you will feed the most will win. So do the math and make the choice. Which bacteria are you going to feed more?

Do you know of any home remedies that one can use to keep psoriasis under control and not lose hair over it? Please share. Your information will help/save a sister in distress over psoriasis.
